Its core consists of volcanic eruption products – basalt and associated pyroclastic deposits, especially visible in the form of exposed agglomerates in the highest parts of the hill. Within them, one can recognize both fragments of basaltic lava and xenoliths, which are fragments of older sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

The basalt exposures are lower, in a large former quarry, now heavily overgrown. They reveal columnar jointing, which is an example of thermal joint – a fairly regular system of cracks formed during the cooling of lava. In the vicinity of basalt, sedimentary rocks – Triassic and Cretaceous sandstones – are present. In the case of the Triassic ones, due to their low resistance to erosion, ravines and gullies have developed, probably through the natural deepening of former paths during the flow of water.

An interesting feature is the earthen ramp leading to the former quarry from the Kaczawa Valley side, which is over 200 meters long and was used to transport the extracted material. At the top, there was an old defensive structure, possibly from prehistoric times, and there may have been a small fortress here in the medieval period. The remains of these structures were likely destroyed due to quarrying activity. A local historical-natural trail leads to the summit of the hill. Near the summit, it uses the old path leading to the viewpoint, made of basalt blocks (steps).

Description: Piotr Migoń, the main photo: Paweł Jaroń

Trail to Czerwony Kamień | mapa-turystyczna.pl

Czerwony Kamień (325 m) is a hill in the northern part of the Kaczawskie Foothills, on the right bank of the Kaczawa Valley, north of Nowy Kościół.
