Złotoryja – the Town of Gold
Złotoryja is one of the oldest towns in central Europe, whose beginnings and later development was connected with gold mining. Złotoryja was granted the municipal rights, as the first town in Silesia, by Henry I the Bearded in 1211. Today it is a very beautiful, neat town with many monuments and attractions. One of themis the Romanesque-Gothic Church of the Birth of Holy Mother: impressive monument full of many curiosities. The inhabitants of the town defended themselves three times inside its walls, which was possible thanks to the fact that the church had its own well and bakery. There was a library in a tower (63 meters high) and today we can still see books on chains on our way to the galleries. Close to the Baroque Church of the Holy Jadwiga, there are buildings of the former Franciscan monastery, in front of which stands the sculpture of St. John Nepomuk and the 15th-century roadside column shrine devoted to St. Jadwiga. There, near the church, starts „The Path Devoted to the Patroness of Silesia” running to Rokitnica. The third shrine, the Church of the St. Nikolaus, is situated on a hill under which there is a gold mine and the drift „Aurelia”, open for visitors. One of the most characteristic monuments of Złotoryja is the Kowalska Tower which protected the Upper Gate and is a perfect view point nowadays. „The Museum of Gold” is another must-see point. We can also have a nice walk through the historic narrow streets of this once very wealthy town.
