St. John and Catharine Church in Swierzawa
The Church devoted to St. John and St. Catharine of Alexandria is a real gem of late Romanesque architecture in Poland. It is relatively unchanged 13th-century church to which a Gothic tower is attached. An extraordinary discovery of unknown Medieval paintings was made in the chancel during the conservation works. There were as much as five layers of painting on the walls of the apse. The oldest 13th-century frescoes presenting animals (on the photo) and The Tree of Life are unique in the scale of Europe. The painted walls of the church tell the legend of St. Catherina of Alexandria and are dated to the 14th century. The exceptional atmosphere of the interior is enhanced by the frescoes, as well as the remaining Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque decor. The church is a museum site. From the top of the tower we can see the beautiful panorama of Swierzawa.
